Nus au bord de la mer brings together many of the elements that define Paul Delvaux’s unmistakable visual world: enigmatic female figures, classical architecture and a serene, dreamlike landscape in which time appears to have come to a standstill. The two nudes inhabit the scene without interacting, reinforcing the sense of mystery and quiet introspection characteristic of Delvaux’s work.

The architectural setting, with its columns, sharply defined perspectives and glimpses towards the sea, creates an almost theatrical space around the figures. Delvaux repeatedly returned to this combination of the female nude and classical or imaginary architecture throughout his career, using it to construct scenes poised somewhere between reality, memory and dream.

Created in 1976, Nus au bord de la mer is an offset lithograph from an edition of 350 copies and is hand-signed by Delvaux in the lower right. At 69 × 47 cm, it is a substantial and highly characteristic example of the artist’s graphic work, offering an accessible opportunity to acquire a signed work by one of the most distinctive figures of Belgian Surrealism.
