Disco Hard Rock is a vibrant three-dimensional wall sculpture by David Gerstein, capturing the energy, rhythm and exuberance of dance through the artist’s instantly recognisable language of bold colour and layered form. A multitude of dancing figures overlap and intertwine across the composition, creating an explosion of movement that seems to extend beyond the boundaries of the work itself.

Constructed from two layers of laser-cut metal, the work occupies the space between painting and sculpture. The layered construction creates physical depth and shifting shadows, while Gerstein’s vivid palette and intricate patterns give each figure its own identity within the larger choreography. The result is a work that changes subtly according to the viewer’s position and the surrounding light.

A particularly appealing aspect of Disco Hard Rock is its individually hand-painted finish. Although created in a limited edition of 150, the works are not simply identical mechanical reproductions. Each example is painted by hand, meaning that colours, details and patterns can vary subtly from one piece to another. Every work therefore retains a degree of individuality within the edition — combining the accessibility of an editioned sculpture with the distinctive character of a hand-finished artwork.

Created in 2012, Disco Hard Rock is a joyful and immediately engaging example of Gerstein’s sculptural practice, bringing together painting, sculpture, movement and colour in a work with both strong visual presence and a distinctly individual character.
