I Can Hear You Call is a haunting and highly symbolic photograph by Martin Stranka, in which a young woman emerges from a smoke-filled landscape holding a fox tightly against her body. The scene suggests rescue and escape — as if the animal has just been carried to safety from a burning landscape — yet Stranka deliberately leaves the narrative unresolved.
One of the most intriguing elements of the composition is the way the woman’s face is cropped. Her eyes remain outside the frame, depriving us of the usual emotional connection with a portrait and making her identity deliberately elusive. She becomes almost an anonymous figure — an unknown protector — while our attention is drawn instead to the fox, its gaze, and the tenderness with which it is held.
That ambiguity gives the photograph much of its symbolic power. Human and animal, danger and protection, destruction and compassion are brought together in a single carefully constructed image. The smoke-filled background reinforces a sense of threat without revealing precisely what has happened, leaving the viewer to complete the narrative. Like much of Stranka’s work, the photograph occupies an uncertain territory between reality and dream, but here that dreamlike quality carries a particularly strong emotional and ecological resonance.
I Can Hear You Call has received recognition in several international photography competitions. The photograph was awarded in the Fine Art Photography Awards 2018, ND Awards 2018, Prix de la Photographie Paris 2018 and Siena International Photography Awards 2017.
