Théo VAN RYSSELBERGHE

Théo van Rysselberghe (1862–1926, Ghent, Belgium) was one of the leading figures of Belgian Neo-Impressionism and played a crucial role in introducing Pointillism to the Belgian avant-garde. Renowned for luminous portraits, Mediterranean landscapes and carefully structured compositions, he combined scientific colour theory with an exceptional sensitivity to atmosphere, light and individual character.

Van Rysselberghe studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent before moving within the progressive artistic circles of Brussels. In 1883, he became one of the founding members of Les XX, the influential group that brought major international avant-garde artists to Belgium. Encounters with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac proved decisive, leading him during the late 1880s toward Divisionism and the systematic use of small touches of pure colour.

Portraiture became one of his greatest strengths. Rather than treating Pointillism as a purely optical system, Van Rysselberghe used it to convey both physical presence and psychological character, producing refined portraits of artists, writers and members of the European intellectual elite. At the same time, repeated stays in the south of France inspired sunlit coastal scenes and landscapes in which the strict pointillist technique gradually became freer and more fluid.

By the early twentieth century, Van Rysselberghe increasingly moved away from strict Divisionism toward a broader and more painterly style, while retaining his fascination with colour and Mediterranean light. He spent much of his later life in Saint-Clair on the French Riviera, where landscape, bathers and intimate domestic scenes became central subjects.

Today, Théo van Rysselberghe is recognized as one of the most important Belgian artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His synthesis of French Neo-Impressionism with a refined tradition of portraiture gave Belgian modernism a distinctive international voice, and his works are held in major museum collections in Belgium and abroad.
