Fernando BOTERO

Fernando Botero (1932–2023, Medellín, Colombia) was one of the most celebrated Latin American artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Renowned for his instantly recognisable style of monumental, voluminous figures, Botero developed a unique visual language that combined humour, elegance and subtle social commentary across painting, sculpture and drawing.

Originally trained in Medellín, Botero travelled extensively through Europe, where he studied the works of the Renaissance masters in Spain and Italy. Inspired by classical composition while forging an entirely personal artistic vision, he created what became known as "Boterismo"—a distinctive style characterised by exaggerated proportions that explore volume rather than weight, challenging conventional perceptions of beauty, power and everyday life.

Throughout his career, Botero exhibited internationally, including major retrospectives at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Palazzo Venezia in Rome, the Musée Maillol in Paris and numerous leading museums across the Americas, Europe and Asia. His monumental bronze sculptures have been installed in prominent public spaces around the world, while his works are held in many of the world's foremost museum and private collections.

Today, Fernando Botero remains one of the most collected and internationally recognised Latin American artists. His unmistakable artistic language continues to captivate collectors worldwide, while his paintings and sculptures regularly achieve outstanding results at major international auctions.
